St George In Bloom wins Royal Horticultural Society award
News from St George In Bloom
MEMBERS of the St George in Bloom team were delighted to find that two of the sites they have developed had been graded ‘Thriving’ by the Royal Horticultural Society’s It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme.
It's Your Neighbourhood is a national scheme to help clean places from residential streets and community gardens to disused areas that need a revamp.
It’s a non-competitive scheme for community groups who want to ‘green up’ local areas, adding some colour while getting active in your local area.
There is an annual visit from an It’s Your Neighbourhood assessor, with useful feedback and advice, support from experienced mentors who will provide guidance and advice, recognition of work done with an annual certificate of achievement and membership of a nationwide network of groups involved in community gardening.
The sites visited by the RHS assessors were the ‘Billboard Site’ on Church Road and the flower bed at the entrance to St George Park. The Billboard Site was cleared and planted in 2016; the St George Park flower bed was completed this summer.
The photographs show the St George Park flower bed before (above), during (top) and after (below) the work was completed; there is also a photograph of the Billboard Site with the lavender in bloom.
Both of these sites have been planted with ‘pollinator friendly’ flowers – many people will have observed the profusion of bees amongst the plants in the summer.
