Mums to bump ‘n’ grind at new support group

A mum-to-be is launching a new event for new mums, mothers-to-be and the women that support them.

Bump ‘n’ Grind is described as a mums’ group with a twist, offering many similarities to a nightclub including DJs, decorations and lighting, as well as a pizza kitchen, support and information and pre-loved clothes and baby bits for sale.

The group is being started by mum-to-be Sinead Portsmouth, with support from her friend Nel. Sinead says that she came up with the idea because many mums feel anxious about joining new groups and because there are very few events which focus on .

“There seemed to be nothing out there that that recognised the changes these women are going through,” said Sinead, who is expecting a boy on 6 December.

“How independent and free spirited, adventurous people have such a huge shock in lifestyle that often leads to a feeling of lost identity. This can sometimes lead to deeper mental health issues and a feeling of ‘not fitting in’ at lots of groups was common.

“I wanted to do something that recognised the need for these women to celebrate themselves and their vitality as well as provide support for them as mothers.”

Bump ‘n’ Grind will take place at the Red Lion, where Nel is the manager. It will take place every month from 7 November at 12 noon to 4:00pm. Entry is £3 and children are welcome and it will be a chance for people to make friends in an easy-going atmosphere.

The event focusses on issues relating to women and so will not cater for men – however this may be reconsidered in future once the event has become more established.

“Some women take a while to warm to a situation and some don't – for the latter the gig room will provide all that's needed to let your hair down for as long as you like,” said Sinead.

“I’ll be trialling the event monthly as I’ll be a new mum myself and listening to what's needed by the people who use it.”
